Attached is the latest Fontographer updater from Altsys, found on their
BBS (1-214-680-9696, First Class). It is uploaded with permission of
technical support.
This updater converts Macintosh version 4.0.3/FPU to 4.0.4/FPU. There are
numerous revisions in the code, including enhanced Unicode support and
better ATM support. This version also corrects problems I've had with
version 4.0.3, including an apparent bug in the guides drawing layer.

Subject: [*] HIPPARCHUS 4.0.0 DEMO - Observational and Positional Astronomy
This is a demonstration version of HIPPARCHUS, a fully integrated, high
precision, astronomical planning, observing, and research tool for positional
astronomy.
Among its many features HIPPARCHUS, allows you to produce star maps and charts
in either Mercator or polar projections of any region of the sky, at varying
scales, in color or Black-and-White. Stellar positions are rigorously
precessed to the equator and equinox of any date, with or without corrections
for stellar proper motions. Targeted regions may be selected for display or
tabulation either by absolute boundary coordinates, centering on a celestial,
or solar system target or on the observer's zenith. Individual stars may be
selected based upon position, brightness, proper motions, catalog numbers,
spectral type, and/or stellar characteristics such as duplicity and
variability. Zoom in or out on targeted regions by interactively choosing the
area from the HIPPARCHUS star chart and horizon view windows, or by varying
field radii in polar projections. Any or all stars may be annotated with
their catalog numbers, Bayer or Flamsted designations, V-magnitudes, spectral
types and luminosity classes. Indications of stellar duplicity and
variability, and constellations overlays may be applied. Non-stellar objects
>From the Messier catalog also may be displayed and annotated. The
instantaneous positions, or orbital tracks, of any of the planets, Sun, Moon
(drawn to scale, or designated by their symbols), minor planets, comets and
artificial Earth-orbiting satellites may also be indicated on any star chart or
horizon view when they fall within the selected area boundary for a specified
date or range of dates. Click on any stellar target to obtain detailed catalog
and instantaneous topocentric, or field centered positional information about
that object.
Precision ephemerides of solar system targets may be computed geocentrically or
topocentrically for any epoch. The precision of the HIPPARCHUS solar system
ephemerides is more than sufficient to examine the topocentrically viewed
appearance of phenomena such as solar eclipses, planetary transits, and lunar
occultations of stars. Search for planetary phenomena such as conjunctions,
node crossings, oppositions, orbital extrema, perihelia, aphelia and more. Use
the HIPPARCHUS orrery to view the solar system from the north ecliptic pole.
The artificial satellite ephemeris computation capability allows you to compute
the position, visibility and ground tracks of these objects from their
Keplerian
orbital elements. Other handy positional tools such as a perpetual graphical
ephemeris for the Galilean moons of Jupiter, a visual display of the lunar
aspect, and a real-time "world clock" showing the terminator delineating day
and
night regions of the Earth, the sub-solar and sub-vernal equinoctial points,
the
demarcation of the longitude at 0h sidereal time, and the sidereal time for a
specified observer are also included. And much more...

Subject: [*] KeyMenu; command keys for all menus
Here is KeyMenu, something I've wanted for years. It provides keyboard
control of all menus, in the MS Word paradigm, but accommodates
hierarchical menus and is configurable. Works with the application menu,
balloon help, Applescript menus.
Other such things I've tried, such as Staircase, I've found buggy. This
isn't, even though it's version 1.0 of 1989, and the extensive
documentation says the author did most of his testing on a Mac Plus with
system 6.0.2. I've been using it for a week on a IIsi, system 7.1, with no
problems. Works with Adobe Illustrator 3.2, Finale 3, WordPerfect 3,
Filemaker 2, ReadySetGo 5, Canvas 3, Hypercard 2.1. Doesn't work with
Symantec's More 3.1, which uses non-standard menus, but doesn't crash.
Author says non-standard menu structures may present a problem, and there
are many implementations of those, but I have used it on quite a range of
programs. I don't use Microsoft programs, though, so I don't know there. No
conflicts with my ton of inits, except for Windows 2.1 (sometimes listed as
Window), an older cdev that adds a window menu to any app lacking one (use
ApplWindows instead). Freeware.
I'm sending this by attaching the .sit file to Eudora mail. Let me know if
that doesn't work for you, and we can try something else. I haven't seen
this anywhere on the Internet, have subscribed to AOL for a week now, and
have hit gold already. Author says distribute freely. It's wonderful. Let
me know what else I can do for you.

This is RunTime, a little app that gives you the total power-on

Tested on the following Macs : ci, fx, vx (all running sys 7.1).
Also tested on a PowerMacintosh 8100... and it works !!!
Macintosh models prior to the IIci don't remember how long they've
been running, so RunTime is useless on theses machines.
RunTime is is free and can be distributed freely.

Fixes several cosmetic problems & bugs when run
on machines without Color QuickDraw (Thanks Judd).

Subject: [*] Strip-Mac! v3.0 -- Adult party game.
This is version 3.0 of Strip-Mac!. It is a significant upgrade from
version 2.4. Details of new features are given in the file "Release
information".
A quick outline of the game Strip-Mac! is a risque, computer-moderated
party game for adults. It is similar to a game of strip poker, but with
"surprises", "rewards" and "punishments" thrown in for good measure.
Briefly, the game plays as follows. Players take turns in drawing a
playing card from the deck. A player who fails to turn up an appropriate
playing card must then choose between options that include:
(a) being paid to removing a piece of clothing;
(b) being paid to take a punishment; and
(c) purchasing a reward.
Play continues until one or all players are naked. What happens next is
up to you...
Cheers,
Tim North.

Over the past few months there have been numerous discussions about how to
address this recurring problem, including share- and freeware programs
designed specifically to handle such problem files. One solution that has
not appeared, in my recollection, is to do a re-boot under another version
of the Mac operating system.
Most definitely, if the problem "file" appears under System 7.x, it can
easily be deleted after a restart under System 6.x. Is there some hidden,
wicked penalty for doing it this way that has yet to surface?

Hmmmm...doesn't the new version 5 of DiskCopy include the ability to
open/save image files?
Tells me it won't run when my Duo 230's undocked at home, though (this model
lacks certain required support, it says)! So I can't open an image file and
copy stuff to my hard disk unless I'm docked at work. Too bad.

Nevertheless, ftp.apple.com DOES enforce a one ftp per domain at a time
restriction (haven't you ever gotten the "sorry someone from your domain is
already connected" message?). I wondered if a similar restriction at sumex
(as opposed to mirrors) wouldn't make sense (the idea would be to push more
users toward mirrors).
I believe gophers connect to a different port. If my (always fallible)
memory is correct, then the number of ftp connections wouldn't affect
access via gopher (which, at sumex at least, is itself excessively heavy).

We've only recently switched from 7 to 8 bit dialup, and I haven't done
timing studies yet, but...
With (mainframes until very recently) 7-bit dialup, the (necessary) 8th-bit
'quoting' that allows binary downloading more than offsets the file size
saving of binary vs binhex.
Even with 8-bit transfers, modern V.32bis compression of binhex seems
likely to offset the advantage of transferring binary (a binary StuffIT or
Compact Pro archive not only isn't very compressible, but just trying to
further compress probably wastes time).
I've taken to using the CMS BINHEX app to convert HQX to Macbinary before
downloading mainly because a vector processing ES9000 CPU does it so much
faster than a 68040 :-) I haven't downloaded a large file in both hqx and
macbin yet to see if there's any appreciable difference in modem transfer
time. Perhaps some enterprising student will undertake that effort as an
exercise ;-)

Subject: ClarisWorks 2.1 and slow cursor
This comment (and question) is both for those who use ClarisWorks 2.1 and for
those who know the inner workings of ClarisWorks 2.1, and who may be able to
give me insight into what determines the speed of the cursor in an
application.
I have tried both ClarisWorks 2.0 Demo and ClarisWorks 2.1 Demo on my Color
Classic (with DayStar PowerCache 33 MHz accelerator installed running a handful
of extensions). The problem is that in the 2.1 Demo, the cursor slows down to
about one half its normal speed and if I try to move the mouse fast, the cursor
trails and creates a ghost image, a bit annoying to say the least. Funny thing
is that this behavior of the cursor is NOT present in the 2.0 Demo. So in
upgrading from 2.0 to 2.1, Claris must have changed something to slowdown the
cursor on machines like Color Classic. On my Centris 610, there is no such
problem. I called the Claris technical support about this and he told me that
it
was my machine and there is nothing one can do about it. BTW this behavior
happens even with all the extensions turned off.
So my question is:
1. Has anyone else experienced this? Especially those who use the release
version 2.1? Is this common to both the release version and the demo version?
2. There must be a patch that can be written to correct this for the 2.1 since
the problem is not there with the 2.0. Does anyone know exactly whatUs wrong or
whatUs different about the 2.1 from the 2.0 as far as the cursor control is
concerned?
Maybe because of this, 2.1 Demo does not seem as robust as 2.0 Demo, and I am
assuming the same problem might exist for the release versions.

Here's a tip for Eudora (and users of any other Mac email software that
uses the Mac's clock to time stamp outgoing email): if you have your clock
set to EDT, then the offset should be -0400 (CDT is -0500, PDT is -0700,
etc.). You put the offset into PRAM in the Map control panel (Time Zone).
Unfortunately, when you change the Time Zone your clock will "spring
forward" again, so you'll have to go into the General control panel and fix
it back (unless, of course, you used the Time Zone in the Map control panel
to adjust for daylight saving time in the first place).

Subject: DOS Compatibility Card Notes
As some of you know Apple introduced the DOS Compatibility Card about a
month ago for the Quadra 610. I've had it for about a week and here's the
scoop.
The card has several interesting options as far as memory, monitors and
hard drive options
Memory
It has one 72 pin SIMM slot (empty) for RAM and it accepts 4, 8, 16, and
32mb SIMMs. (I'm not sure about a 1 mb SIMM) It can also "borrow" memory
directly from the Mac. In a 20 mb machine I was able to assign increments
of 4mb up to 16mb to the DOS card. The memory control panel will just show
a large System Software partition when the DOS card is using the Mac's RAM.
Also, you can't both have on-board RAM and share some of the Mac's RAM it's
either or. I don't have enough RAM to test if you can assign more than
32mb to the card from a Mac. It shares the RAM with a DMA controller on
the card.
Monitors
The DOS card can share one monitor attached to both cards via a Y cable or
it can independently drive a VGA, Apple 13, 14 and 16" monitor. The
connector is a standard Mac 15-pin connector. If you use one monitor, the
image jumps when you switch but Apple has an option to fade the Mac screen
before this happens. When you use two screens you can see both update
simultaneously, but when you are in a DOS environment the Mac screen is
always slightly dimmed. I tried connecting two Apple 16" displays (one the
Mac and one to the card) it worked fine. In fact, with the correct Windows
drivers you can easily get 800x600 on the Apple 16".
Hard Drives
The DOS card comes with PC Exchange 2.0. The major difference in 2.0 is
that it has a built-in PC SCSI Probe which allows you to mount PC SCSI
discs on your Mac desktop as well as CD drives too. Otherwise you can
create a PC partition file on one of your Mac volumes just like SoftPC. PC
Exchange 2.0 also reads SoftPC hard drive partitions although the
documentation says you can't boot from a SoftPC volume. If you set the
LASTDRIVE option in your CONFIG.SYS in DOS, you can assign multiple volumes
or folders as shared drives in DOS. Which means you can access your Mac
data in DOS by assigning a drive letter to whatever folder you want. The
drawback is that DOS supports only 8.3 names so your long Mac names look
funny in DOS.
Networks
The DOS card doesn't support the on-board Ethernet so you can't do Ethernet
in DOS/Windows. The documentation doesn't even mention this.
Serial Ports
The DOS card allows you to use any Mac serial port as a COMx: device in
DOS. You have to assign the port in the PC setup and the card opens the
port so you can't share a modem between the two without going into PC
setup. The card only supports COM1 and COM2.
Parallel Port
There is no physical parallel printing port available with the card, but
the card does emulate a PC printer though LPT1:. There is a PC Print
Monitor installed in your extensions folder that prints jobs from the card.
Mouse
The DOS card doesn't come with a Mouse.COM driver, but the Mac mouse works
in Windows. I installed a MOUSE.COM from my Dell and it found and
recognized the mouse in DOS applications.
Game Port
The DOS card monitor card has a 15-pin connector for PC-style joysticks. I
don't have one around, but I assume it works.
OS's
The DOS card comes with a shrinked-wrapped copy of MS-DOS 6.2. If you
setup a partition you have to install it. It doesn't come with Windows,
but I took a shrink-wrapped copy of Windoze 3.1 and installed it. I
haven't tried OS/2 or any x86 Unix but I suppose they would work.
Copy & Paste between
The DOS card installer includes a utility for the Mac and a PC TSR which
converts the Mac clipboard into a DOS clipboard or Windows clipboard and
vice-versa. I tried using simple text transfer between both and it worked
fine. A little message comes up everytime you switch so I disabled this
feature.
Macintosh Easy Open
The DOS card also comes with Mac Easy Open 1.0.4 to facilitate conversion
between the different environment formats. If you need heavy duty
conversion you still require a commercial package for this. Mac Easy Open
1.0.4 has another subtle enhancement, it uses the small icon view for icons
in open/save dialog listings. This is similar to the DialogView extension.
Hacking around
Different CPUs?
It's supposed to be used only in a Quadra 610 - but I dediced to play
around with other machines I have. The card is mounted on a bracket designed
for the Quadra 610. It's really just a 040 PDS card plugged into a converter
for the Quadra 610 slot.
I have verified the card works on a Quadra 700 and Quadra 800. Since the
card doesn't have a crystal on-board, the i486sx runs at the same speed the
CPU it's plugged into runs, thus 33 Mhz in a Quadra 800. I should note the
040 PDS slots in those machines are well inside and the monitor cable that
plugs into the DOS card just hangs out of Nubus slot that is parallel with
the PDS slot.
On Monitors...
One limitation I did find was that the card doesn't support one 16" display
on a Quadra 700 - the PC setup control panel just says "wrong type" for the
display. Two 16" screens or one 14" screen worked fine. Also if you put
the DOS card into a Mac with more than one Mac screen, during the first
switch from Mac to DOS the system will freeze. I don't blame that
situation since you can't have two Mac screens active on a Quadra 610
anyway

I am probaby overlooking something, but I can't place it, so here goes:

with an "Unable to access document/Text has not been loaded" error.
* Downloaded Bird Songs from sumex, unpacked the files (placing the sound
files from Pt. 2 in the Bird Files folder, as per instructions) and tried
to play. Application starts, displays splash screen, followed by the "bird

least one Bird File must be present in Bird Files folder...", after which
the application quits. The Bird Files folder is in the same folder as the
application, and it contains all the bird files included in the release.
Since both cases seemed to be that the application was not locating its
files, I attempted rebuilding the desktop (using TechTool 1.0.3), as well

Subject: Growing system heap - culprit found
I posted a note to the digest yesterday about my system which
appears to grow and occupy more and more RAM as time goes by.
Since then, I've done a little testing and found that:
a) INITs and extensions do not seem to be responsable, since the
problem still arises if I start with everything turned off.
b) There are two culprits: Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
Let's illustrate the problem. At startup, the 'About this
Macintosh' window indicates that the system is eating up 3120 Ko. After
loading and unloading WordPerfect 3.a and Kaleidagraph 3.01, the system
rises to 3252 Ko and sinks back to 3177 Ko. After loading Excel, it
occupies 4074 Ko and when Excel is unloaded it *only* shrinks to 4043 Ko.
Can anyone kindly explain what is going on? And is there a cure
(knowing that I've tried HeapTool which doesn't fix the problem).

As with all settings, to make them global save a MacWrite Pro Options

Hello Folks,
We are talking about what a client/server environment should look like here

either of these items, beyond what I've read by various proponents/opponents
of each. Can anyone out there speak to a rookie about these?
Specifically, what does each of these protocols mean to me in developing
clients on a Mac/PowerMac? Since this issue is fairly new I'm having a hard

Subject: Info-Mac mirrors and ftp congestion
Although delaying the announcement of new submissions may
help the congestion problem a bit, the real problem is that
there simply aren't enough mirror sites, at least in the
continental US. In the list in issue 49, I count a total
of 7 US sites (amug.org, grind.isca.uiowa.edu,
gopher.lcs.mit.edu, wuarchive.wustl.edu, ricevm1.rice.edu,
ftp.uu.net, and sumex, of course). Two of these are
special purpose (mit, rice) and all of the others limit
the number of ftp sessions. Wuarchive seems to be the
biggest, but it only serves 175 sessions during the day
and is often clogged.
Undoubtedly the continental US has more people trying
to access these archives than anywhere else, yet there
are only a small number of archive sites. What to do?
Recruit more public archive servers? Certainly, but
where? Cross mount the archives to CompuServe or AOL
(and let them worry about archive server load)?
Practical, but neither egalitarian nor, I suspect,
popular?
Any other ideas?

Hello info-mac,
I'm sending this message for a friend of mine who is having problems with a

an SE/30. The SE/30 died recently and they are trying to hook the printer up
to a Mac Classic. However, when they connect the printer to the Classic it
refuses to boot, just gets the dreaded disk with a question mark. According to
my friend, the printer doesn't have a Localtalk port, but rather a SCSI and an

Classic to talk to the LaserWriter?

So I looked at the 'about this Macintosh' item under the Apple menu

been around 3Mo. Thanks to Memory Mapper, I was able to pin this down to an
unusually large system heap.
I re-started the Mac and all was OK, back to about 3 Mo for the
system, and this is still the case every time I re-start. However, every
time I load an application, the system GROWS - today it went from 3268 Ko

3686 Ko.
What is going on? Should I re-install my system? Should I hunt

Subject: Photoshop Plug-in Compatible Programs
I am currently trying to put together a list of programs which support the
Photoshop plug-in standard [Acquire, Export, Filter, and the new Format
plug-in].
As Adobe was very good at 'spreading the word' with its free distribution of
the 2.0 Plug-in Developers Kit, many programs took up the standard, ranging
>From Ray Dream Designer 3.0 to NIH-Image 1.50.
While searching through mail order catalogs, company literature, MacWeeks, &
other Macazines in order to compile my list, I was struck by the happenstance
nature of the information on Plug-in compatibility. Calling the smaller
companies led to quick responses, but calling Claris... 5 hours later:
'well, I think that BrushStrokes supports some but not all of the plug-ins'.
Read: buy it and see, get off my back.
Thus, my request to Info-Mac readers: If you have any experience with
plug-in compatible programs, please e-mail me, I will put together a list,
and resubmit it to Info-Mac.
By showing companies like Claris that the competition is jumping on the
band-wagon, maybe the Plug-in standard can do what the TWAIN idea attempted
to, to create a standard method for addressing our scanners, cameras,
printers, and filters. I sure would like to bring data directly into MacDraw
Pro or Hypercard without worrying about XTND's, XCMD's, Xetc. [By the way,
how many people have even heard of the TWAIN standard? And with Adobe's
purchase of Aldus, how many ever will?]

I tried this out on her, and although she had big problems in rolling the

But maybe there are other aids to be used for people in that situation. Or
devices that could turn a PowerBook into a really useful device. Things

I know that Apple, at least in earlier years, has focused on disability. We

Hi Alfred,
Our company has a product called "Developer's FTP-Kit for the
Macintosh" that will give you exactly what you need. It is
available both as a C Library and a set of two external functions
for 4th Dimension. Two convenient functions FTPSend() and
FTPReceive() will allow you to transfer a file from the
Mac to any FTP server and vice versa under full program
control (IP-Address, UserID, and Password are given as
parameteres, so there is absolutely NO interaction with
the user necessary!). Extensive error reporting is also
included and an optional progress bar can be displayed
to keep the user informed. The price is US$ 79.-, payment
is accepted via credit card (Visa, MC, AmEx, Diners, JCB).
If you are interested, send e-mail to <falk@applelink.apple.com>
or give us a call at +43 (1) 545-5155 and I'll forward our detailed
product and order information to you. You can also fax us at

I haven't used Suitcase with 7.1, but I believe the last couple of
minor updates (2.1.4 is the latest I have) have been to fix problems
with 7.1 and/or the Quadras. It works fine for me on a IIsi with
7.01. I keep most fonts, most DAs, FKEYs, and sounds in folders
outside my system folder. I do, however, keep Monaco, Geneva, and
Chicago in the System. Makes them all easier (IMHO) to manage, and
helps reduce the size of the system folder a bit. Disadvantages? It
tends to break with new releases of system software or new Macs,
and the updates, which are available on-line, sometimes take a
couple of days (;-)) to appear. And, it costs money. No idea what
Symantic will do to it.
Usual disclaimers apply (I don't work for anybody), but I recommend
it.

Yes it works, yes it easy to change suitcases any time, no I have
not found any problems with it, yes it does exactly what you want
and this is exactly what it is for, and *why* the heck doesn't
system 7.1 work more or less this way already? I was really looking
forward to the "Fonts Folder" which 7.1 introduced, and was really
disappointed when it turned out that you couldn't take something
*out* of that folder while any applications were running. Since I
use several Startup utilities, applications are *always* running on
my machine. IMHO the Fonts Folder is no improvement at all over the
"openable" System introduced with 7.0. Use Suitcase! By the way, I
am still using the "old" version of Suitcase; I never upgraded to
Suitcase II. m.

Subject: Tape Drive (Q)
Does anyone have any experience with tape backup drives? Though I would
like to purchase a 2 GB DAT drive, my budget director tells me
that I can only go as high as $500 (the drives I will be backing up only
go as high as 240 MB, but I can always hope for the future...) That
leaves me with the APS Teac 155. Does anyone have any experience with
this drive? It comes bundled with Retrospect. Does this (or any other
software) compress data as it is being backed up? I know that this
software exists for the PC, I would hope that it would for the Mac.
TIA

Subject: Telnet 2.6 and setting transfer directory
When I try to ftp a file down to my Mac using the new Telnet 2.6, my
machine hangs. I suspect this has to do with setting the transfer directory.
We used to be able to set the transfer directory in version 2.5 but I can
no longer find a way to set this parameter in version 2.6.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Can someone help?
Thank you.

OFFICE MEMO TrueType font converter Date:4/6/94
Appreciate any reply - short or long. Please response to:
tin.nguyen@sasktel.sk.ca.
I'm having trouble converting a Windows TrueType foreign language font over to
the Mac (system 7). The font uses the upper ASCII codes (128 to 255) for its
special foreign characters. After the conversion to the Mac, these special
characters are all present but in the wrong positions. I've tried several
shareware font conversion packages (including TTconverter) and FontMonger, a
commercial package. They all have this problem.
Any idea why? Please suggest solution.
For the worst case , if none of the available utilities can convert fonts using
upper ASCII codes then I'll try to write one myself. Where can a person obtain
documents describing the internal structure of font files for Windows and
Macintosh?
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Tin Nguyen

Subject: Which INITS for 840av?
When I got my 840av I was disappointed with the speed at which it recognizes,
reads, and writes floppy disks. I was wondering if any of the following
INITS (or others) address this problem:
AV Cache Tuner 1.01
AV Boost 1.0
AV Speedup 1.1d1
AV Resource Manager Tuner 1.0
AV Turbo ROM
I was also wonder which of these INITS (or others) that people have tried
and found signifcant improvements and/or incompatiblities with the 840av?
Thanks. Michael

Subject: Will Hewlett-Packard laser printer work w/ Mac II?
I have a Mac II and am looking to buy a laser printer which will be used
for printing text (few if any graphics). There are a few ads in the paper
for Hewlett-Packard laser printers. Are these for IBMs only or will they
work with my mac? I don't have an ethernet card. Otherwise I am looking at
a Personal LaserWriter 300. Any experiences with this printer, good or bad?
Any help is appreciated; e-mail to me directly and I will post results to
the digest if I receive a request to do so.
